Your wedding budget is a tricky business. If it’s not planned properly you could end up spending 95% of it with important elements still left to book and pay for.

There are a number of reasons couples can blow their budget and they’re avoidable with some careful planning.

Don't blow your budget

Not planning for emergencies

Or, in fact, not planning for anything. When it comes to budgeting for a wedding you can’t look at things one at a time and think, “That’s not a bad price,” without having any real idea about what you can afford. As well as that, extra costs may come up that you hadn’t accounted for and if you have no left over funds for these extra costs, you’re going to have to take it from somewhere else.

Hidden costs

You know how much your flowers are, but are the boutonnieres included? You what your cake costs, but did you factor in delivery? You have priced your venue, but does it come with a gratuity? There are plenty of times to fall into a pitfall of hidden charges. Check out our list of hidden charges to look out for so you don’t get a fright when the bills come pouring in.

Unevenly divided budget

It’s very difficult to gage how much of your budget should go to your flowers, versus how much you should spend on your photographer or your cake. Every wedding is different and it all depends on what elements are most important to you. Do some research and shopping around to find out what you will be expected to pay. If you’re still confused, we have a general breakdown to help you out.

Giant guest list

Couples often only factor in the cost of their guest list when booking the venue and figuring out how many they have to feed. But there’s more to it than that. Any extras you are offering your guests that are not included in your venue quote will add up fast for every guest you add to the pile. Be it post-wedding nibbles, a signature cocktail or wedding favours, not to mention any stationery you send out. Make sure you factor all of this in when settling on your final number.

Overdoing the décor

Don’t lose control of the décor budget. Many couples forget how much the reception is often already decorated by the venue and end up over spending on extra flowers or chair covers. Don’t be left with things you won’t need but definitely overspent on. Take a good look at your ceremony and reception space, find out what you will get and from there you can think about what extras you really need.
