The first dance song is one of the most meaningful moments of the reception. The choice of music you use is vital. There are a plethora of great love songs that, when you think about them maybe a little deeper, you might want to reconsider if you’re using them for your first dance. When you listen to the lyrics, you find some of the ideal first dance songs actually don’t work as well as you’d first think they would.
Bon Jovi - Always
Yes, the New Jersey band promises to “love you always”, but this is written after a break-up. We’re not too sure you want to think about breaking up while you’re celebrating your wedding day.
James Blunt - You’re Beautiful
Once again, the title may make you think it’s all about having found the most beautiful person on the planet. In fact, this is actually a song detailing unrequited love and lost chances.
Sam Smith - Stay With Me
“Stay with me, 'cause you’re all I need.” Perfect for a first dance, yes? “This ain’t love, it’s clear to see.” Maybe it turns out it isn’t such a good choice.
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
It may seem like the perfect song - the love theme from Titanic, and a homage to one of cinema’s most loved couples. But it’s important to remember the tragic outcome of the movie too. This is more about life going on after a loved one has passed than an everlasting love coming from your wedding.
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
There’s no doubt whatsoever this is one of the best love songs out there. However, Whitney says “so goodbye” in the second verse. Perhaps that’s not quite the route you want to take for your first dance as man and wife, we think.
